The Benefits of a One Day Liquid Fast

25 Jun 2018

The Benefits of a One Day Liquid Fast

 juice fast

Whilst liquid diets have been popular for some time, they have also attracted a bad name for themselves due to the negative effects associated with them. However, according to experts this is because many people are doing them the wrong way and for the wrong reasons. For best results, a 24-hour liquid fast is the perfect amount of time, and any longer will actually lead to the opposite of the desired effects.

juice diet

So what are the benefits? Digesting food accounts for around 50% of the bodies energy expenditure, so by only consuming liquids you are taking out a lot of the hard work and leaving excess energy to be used elsewhere. Therefore, a one day liquid fast will leave you feeling energised. You will feel lighter in body and mind, brain fog will lift, and you will find it easier to concentrate. By consuming blended fruit and veg, you will be taking in plenty of antioxidants, which help with the bodied natural detoxification process, helping your vital organs to work more quickly.

The fast will also give your metabolism a small shock, helping to to work more effectively. However, if you carry on for too many days, your body will go into survival mode and your metabolism will slow down, leaving you with less energy. This is why 24 hours is the perfect amount of time. However, you can do one liquid day per week or month.

Soups, juices, smoothies and herbal teas will form the basis of your liquid day, and remember to drink plenty of water too. How much liquid you consume and when will be determined by your own body, as everyone is different. Try different recipes to find your favourites which have the best effect and give a wide range of fruits and vegetables. Try starting the day with a mug of hot water with the juice of half a lemon, then have a smoothie or juice for breakfast, followed by another as a mid-morning snack. Eat soup for lunch and dinner, with another juice or smoothie as an afternoon snack. This should fill you up if done correctly, and don't be afraid to have an extra drink if you're starving.

Protein Pacing: The Scientifically Backed Technique to Lose Weight

Protein Pacing: The Scientifically Backed Technique to Lose Weight

Party season is fast approaching and many of us are looking to lose a few extra pounds to look our best in that little black dress. Protein pacing could be the answer to kick start your diet or break your weight loss plateau. The idea is that you increase your protein intake whilst staggering it throughout the day for optimal fat loss and fitness gains.

In a recent study, researchers at Skidmore College monitored 50 physically fit men and women, and split them into two groups. Both groups followed the same exercise routine of resistance exercise, interval sprints, stretching, and endurance exercise, also known as the RISE method. But only one group adopted protein pacing into their routine, while the other did not.

The results showed the huge impact that diet has over our physicality. Even though both groups were following the same intensive exercise routine, the protein-pacing group had more fitness gains, lost more belly fat, and had better lean body mass.

According to one of the study's lead scientists, Paul Arciero, adopting the strategy at home is actually pretty simple: You'll want to aim for 20 grams of protein, four to six times per day. If you're active it would benefit you to increase this to 25-30g, 4-6 times per day. Ensuring that your protein is from healthy sources, and adding the RISE workout method will also help you to achieve your goals, but the main thing is to ensure that your protein intake is consistent.

A Review of The Sirtfood Diet

14 May 2016

A Review of The Sirtfood Diet

The Sirtfood diet is THE diet of 2016. Not sure what it is? Read our blog post to find out what exactly is it.

Certain foods, known as 'sirtfoods' have been shown to activate specific proteins in the body known as sirtuins. Sirtuins influence the body's ability to burn fat and boost metabolism, in the same way that exercise or fasting does. So eating sirtfoods causes your body to burn fat with minimal effort from yourself.

The diet has two phases. Phase one lasts for one week. On days 1-3 dieters consume three green juices and one sirtfood rich meal, restricting overall calorie intake to 1000 per day. On days 4-7 dieters consume two juices and two sirtfood rich meals, following a specific meal plan, restricting calories to 1500 per day.

Phase two involves following a meal plan of three sirtfood meals and one juice per day. This phase lasts for two weeks and steady weight loss should still occur.

The idea of the diet is that once phase two is complete, dieters can eat their usual diet but with a few extra inclusions or substitutes to include more sirtfoods.

So here's my experience of the diet...

I read several online reviews where dieters claimed they did not get hungry. THEY WERE LYING. Days 1-3 were so hard, consuming nothing but juice and green tea until my evening meal. Day 3 was the hardest thing ever as I felt quite lethargic due to lack of calorie intake.

Another thing dieters have stated is that they enjoyed the juices and meals. The juices taste of celery. I can bear them but I have not enjoyed them. Don't worry, it gets easier as you get used to them.

As for the meals, I have mixed feelings. I enjoyed parts of the meals, for example the miso cod was delicious and the cauliflower cous cous has changed my life. But you also have to eat buckwheat. Have you ever tried buckwheat? Don't, it's vile. I am not a picky eater but even after starving myself for most of the day I couldn't force myself to eat all of my buckwheat, leaving me still hungry some days. Some dieters reported being so full they couldn't finish their meals. Again, I think this was a lie- they weren't full and simply didn't want to eat buckwheat.

After week one it gets easier, despite the fact that three meals and one juice per day means spending most of your free time in the kitchen. I felt that I could be a little more flexible, alternate the buckwheat for something else, cook the meals my way. And now as I approach the end of week two I am starting to enjoy the diet more. I'm embracing the fact that it is a diet of inclusion not exclusion, and I don't have to completely avoid any particular food.

So did it work?

Well I am pleased to say that at the end of one grueling week I had lost five pounds. I also usually exercise but only went to the gym once in this time due to lack of energy. Week two has seen me keep the weight off but not lose any more, however I have been quite flexible with the diet. I also feel like it's a diet I can keep up long term, and that I could always repeat week one in the hope of losing another five pounds. However, I'm not 100% convinced that the weight loss was due to sirtfoods and not sheer starvation- I'm sure I was consuming around 500 calories per day on days 1-3.

The main purpose of the diet is also to improve overall wellbeing. I have to say I find that I have more energy and don't feel the need to consume quite so much caffeine during the day.

If you're looking to lose weight fast for summer without celery juice and starvation, Bliss are on hand to help with 3D lipo. 3D liposuction is a new weight management system - a non-invasive course of localised fat reduction which combines Ultrasound Cavitation with fat freezing to combat cellulite, tighten skin and drop pounds.
