Read on for our top tips to get the best results from your Bliss spray tan.

Before your spray tan

First, shave any unwanted hair from your body. It's best to do this about 24 hours prior to your spray tan, so that if you do experience any cuts or nicks they can heal. Follow up by exfoliating - removing dead skin cells helps your tan to last longer.  Avoid applying any lotions and ideally deodorant before your spray, as it can act as a barrier and leave your tan looking patchy.

For best results, book your appointment for after you have finished showering and exercising for the day.

After your spray tan

Wear dark, loose fitting clothes after your spray tan to avoid streaking and staining your clothes. Avoid washing the guide colour off for 6-8 hours afterwards to allow the tan to fully develop. Leaving it overnight allows it to develop as much as possible, as your body temperature rises as you sleep. You should also avoid showering, swimming, and exercising whilst the tan is developing. When the time comes to shower, lukewarm water is the best option as it won't strip away as much of the initial colour.

Oils and balms will erode your tan, and make it fade faster, so you should opt for oil-free body lotions which will help your tan to last longer. Be aware that exfoliation and shaving also lead to your tan fading faster.

Finally, when you do take showers, pat your skin dry rather than rubbing too much.

1. If you have never been on a sunbed, or if you are fair skinned or burn easily, keep your sessions to 3 minutes. You can then build this up very gradually as you start to develop a tan, but be wary - overdoing it is dangerous.
2. Use sunbed lotion to protect your skin and maximise tanning.
3. ALWAYS wear tanning goggles to protect your eyes.
4. Protect your lips with UV lip balm - as lips do not produce melanin they are at risk of burning.
5. If you are unfortunate enough to get sun burnt soothe your skin with moisturiser and do not return to the sunbed until all of the redness has gone.
6. Always make sure that you eat and drink water before tanning to avoid feeling unwell during your sunbed session.
7. Exfoliate before you start tanning, and keep skin moisturised for best results, and to reduce your risk of burning.

How to heal sunburn

How to heal sunburn

.
.
The weather has been a little up and down lately, but we're so happy to have been treated to a few hot, sunny days. However, unfortunately, we can get a little overexcited and forget to take the proper precautions to avoid sunburn.
We've all been there - it's red, it's hot, it can be blistery, painful and peeling. When we get sunburnt we want to heal it as quickly as possible so we can enjoy the sun again (armed with plenty of factor 50 this time).
So here are our top tips to heal sunburnt skin as quickly as possible...
1. Cool the affected skin as soon as possible, ideally using ice. Follow with a cold bath or shower, and avoid hot or warm water.
2. Use products with a high water content, and look for the following ingredients:
Aloe Vera
Cucumber
Shea butter
Rose water
Calamine
Lanolin balm
Fresh cucumber can also be applied directly to the burnt areas to cool and hydrate.
3. Avoid using exfoliates and skin products that contain the following ingredients for a few days:
Petroleum
Benzocaine
Lidocaine
4. Keep the area moisturised to avoid peeling. Look for moisturisers containing high levels of vitamins C and E.
5. Avoid the sun until the redness has disappeared. If you must go out in the sun, cover the affected areas and use plenty of sun cream.
.
.
Anyone who's been sunburnt before will probably agree that prevention is better than cure. So ensure that you're using the correct sun cream - one that is high factor and says the words 'broad spectrum' on the bottle. Reapply every two hours and take regular breaks in the shade.
.
Using sunbeds in advance of your holiday can kick start your tan and begin to build up a resistance to burning. Check out our top tips to use sunbeds safely and avoid getting burnt. Keep an eye on the blog to find out when Bliss will reopen and offer our much loved sunbeds and spray tans again!

Bliss Sunbeds vs. Spray Tans: The Great Debate

Bliss Sunbeds vs. Spray Tans: The Great Debate

An upsetting side effect of winter is that summer tans are long gone, leaving us a lighter shade of pale. Whilst some people are lucky enough to rock the English Rose look no problem, many of us mourn the loss of our bronzed skin with great sadness. Luckily, Bliss is here to rescue you from a winter of pasty pale skin. Bliss offers two different ways to recover your summer glow: sunbeds or spray tans, and our handy blog post will help you decide which one is for you.
.
.
Contrary to common belief, there are actually plenty of health benefits of using sunbeds. The body converts sunshine into vitamin D, which helps to boost your immune system and increase bone strength. Research has also suggested that it may even help to protect us against depression, cancer and Alzheimer's disease. So for anyone with vitamin D deficiency, or anyone who is worried about, or at risk of, any of the above health problems, sunbeds should be considered. Pre-holiday sun beds also reduce the risk of burning whilst you're away, as they build up some resistance to the sun.
.
Anyone who suffers from skin conditions such as Acne, Psoriasis and Eczema will find that sunbeds are very effective in helping to treat these. Many dermatologists also praise sunbeds for it's benefits in treating dermatitis. Even if you don't suffer from a skin condition, sunbeds make skin less prone to spots, which I think we'd all appreciate!
.
This isn't to say that the usual warning about skin cancer should be ignored- it's still very important to protect yourself from burning and tan safely. For those who burn very easily, spray tans may be a better option. In contrast to sunbeds there is no exposure to radiation, and no risk of burning and the associated health issues. It is also a faster option- you can simply pop down to your local Bliss the day before an event or holiday and you'll be the perfect shade of bronze for the big day. Sunbeds are best used for a gradual tanning which builds up more slowly but lasts for as long as you keep topping it up, or for prolonging your tan post holiday. Another benefit of sunbeds is that your colour is all natural.
.
It's important to think about the pros and cons before you decide on a tanning method, and it's always important to protect yourself on sunbeds. At Bliss we encourage tanning sensibly and safely at all times. Whichever you choose, Bliss is here to help you keep that summer glow and feel fabulous all year round!
Fast tanning October Offer: 100 minutes for £19.95! Course share us available.

Do check our monthly offers regularly as we feature amazing deals on both sunbeds and spray tans.

How to heal sunburnt skin

We're loving the sunny weather we've been treated to recently, and we adore sunning ourselves abroad in the summer. Not to mention we're also a little bit obsessed with sunbeds. However, unfortunately, we can get a little overexcited and forget to take the proper precautions to avoid sunburn.

How to Make Your Holiday Tan Last!

19 Aug 2017

How to Make Your Holiday Tan Last!

When our holiday blues begin to kick in the one thing that cheers us up a little is knowing that we've returned to grey, rainy Britain with a beautiful golden tan. If you want to hold onto that bronze glow for as long as possible, be sure to follow these steps to remain brown into autumn.

1. You can't moisturise enough! Apply it every day after being in the sun, at least once, to avoid peeling and prolong your tan, and continue applying a couple of times a day once you get home. No amount of moisturiser is too much so don't be shy.

2. Go easy on hot baths and showers and always use a hydrating body wash. Hot water can have a dehydrating effect on your skin so slightly cooler showers are better.

3. Exfoliate but very gently. The best thing for your tan is to exfoliate right before your holiday then gently top up after, as dead skin can cause your tan to look faded and dull. However using harsh exfoliates,  hair removal cream or waxing removes the entire top layer of skin and therefore your tan so be careful.

4. Stay hydrated and eat healthily. Drinking plenty of water is essential for healthy, radiant skin, as is eating a healthy balanced diet providing you with all necessary vitamins. Try to eat more foods rich in beta-carotene such as papaya, sweet potato, carrot and mango.

5. If your tan still fades sooner than you hoped, or if you didn't manage to tan as much as you wanted to, Bliss are always on hand with our top of the range sunbeds. Courses can be purchased online or in branch and redeemed at Street Lane, Baby or Retreat.

6. There's always the option to fake it with Bliss' sexy contouring spray tans - choose your shade and let our therapists work their magic. Why not combine your spray tan with some other treatments in one of our packages for a glam makeover?

All sunbed courses and spray tans can be purchased online here.
